The Story of Old man and the Ship ( with Marathi translation )

Once, an engine of the big ship failed. The ship owners and workers tried many attempts to understand and resolve the issue, but none of them could figure it out.

As suggested by one worker, Owner called a local man who had the experience of fixing ships. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work.

Shipowner and workers, watching this man, hoped he would know what to do. He inspected the engine from top to bottom carefully.

After proper analysis, the man reached into his bag and pulled out a big hammer. He again analyzed the ship and then tapped with his hammer. Instantly, the engine came to life. He carefully put his hammer away and handed a bill of Rs. 10,000/- to ship owners.

What?!” the owners exclaimed.

You hardly did anything!” and requested an itemized bill.

The man gave a bill that read:

Tapping with a hammer………………….. Rs. 100.00
Knowing where to tap…………………….. Rs. 9,900.00

The ship owners discussed and realized the value of the expertise of that man. They thanked him and paid his full bill.

Moral of the story:

Effort is essential, but knowing where to make an effort makes all the difference!
